Ultrasound Thyroid

The thyroid gland makes the thyroid hormone, which helps to regulate a variety of body functions, including metabolism. A thyroid ultrasound is recommended If a thyroid function test is abnormal, or if your doctor feels a growth on your thyroid when checking your neck. When a physical exam reveals any of the following findings, a thyroid ultrasound is routinely performed: * Thyroid nodule(s), a growth on the thyroid gland. * A goiter - swelling or irregularity of the thyroid gland. * Atypical lymph nodes near the thyroid gland An ultrasound can also be used to determine if the thyroid gland is underactive or hyperactive. The procedure involves lying down with a cushion or other soft support under your neck. Your neck will be slightly stretched.
