Implanon Removal

Implanon is a contraceptive implant, one of the many long-lasting and reversible contraceptive techniques available. A progestin-impregnated tiny plastic rod is inserted beneath the skin on the medial side of the upper arm which inhibits fertilization in a variety of ways. This procedure relies on the 'pop out' method to remove the Implanon implant. Anesthesia is applied to the skin over the rod's tip, and a 2-mm longitudinal cut is created over one end of the implant, which is viewed and stabilized by pushing on the other end.
