The combination of Alendronic Acid and Calciferol belongs to the class of bisphosphonates and vitamin D analogs, and it is indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
How Alendronic Acid + Calciferol Works
Alendronic Acid, a bisphosphonate, inhibits bone resorption by binding to hydroxyapatite crystals in bone, thereby reducing bone turnover. Calciferol, a form of vitamin D, aids in calcium absorption, promoting bone mineralization and supporting overall bone health. Together, they address osteoporosis by enhancing bone density and strength.
Side Effects of Alendronic Acid + Calciferol
Gastrointestinal irritation, Heartburn, Nausea, and Musculoskeletal pain.
Warnings
Kidney Safe If Prescribed
Do not require dose adjustment for patients with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) greater than 35 ml/min. However, it is not recommended for patients with impaired renal function if the GFR is less than 35 ml/min, as there is no data on this.
Alcohol Safe
Alendronic Acid + Calciferol has no interaction with alcohol.
Pregnancy Not Safe
There are no adequate data from the use of Alendronic Acid + Calciferol in pregnant women. Animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity which caused dystocia related to hypocalcemia in rats. Alendronic Acid + Calciferol should not be used during pregnancy.
Driving Generally Safe
Alendronic Acid + Calciferol usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
Liver Safe If Prescribed
No dose adjustment is necessary.
Lactation Limited Data
It is not known whether Alendronic Acid + Calciferol/Metabolites are excreted in human milk. A risk to the newborns/infants cannot be excluded. Alendronic Acid + Calciferol not be used during breast-feeding.
