Uses of Ambroxol

Ambroxol is commonly used in the treatment of respiratory tract disorders associated with viscid mucus and cough.

How Ambroxol Works

Ambroxol is a type of mucolytic drug and thus, it promotes expectoration and relieves cough through an increase in the secretion of fluid and mucociliary clearance.

Side Effects of Ambroxol

Diarrhea, Nausea, Heartburn, Vomiting, Dry Mouth or throat, Dyspepsia, Altered taste, Rash, Abdominal pain

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

In the presence of kidney disease, Ambroxol must be taken with caution. It is best to consult a doctor first for dose adjustment.

Alcohol Not Advisable

There is no study on the interaction between Ambroxol and alcohol, however, it is better to avoid alcohol while taking Ambroxol.

Pregnancy Not Safe

There are adverse effects on the fetus as shown in animal studies, however, there are no sufficient and well-controlled data from human studies. During the first trimester of pregnancy, it is best to avoid taking Ambroxol. It should only be used if the benefits surpass the risks to the fetus.

Driving Generally Safe

Ambroxol usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Use With Care

Ambroxol should be used with caution in patients having liver disease. It is best to consult a doctor first for dose adjustment.

Lactation Limited Data

It is not advisable to use Ambroxol during lactation as it is excreted in breast milk. However, there is limited data on whether Ambroxol might cause significant risk to the baby.
