Uses of Budesonide

Budesonide is commonly used to treat Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis by orally, asthma, nasal polyp and allergic rhinitis through the inhaler

How Budesonide Works

Budesonide is a corticosteroid. It works by impeding or controlling inflammation through regulation of the rate of protein synthesis and prohibition of the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and fibroblasts. It also reduces capillary permeability and stabilizes lysozyme.

Side Effects of Budesonide

Diabetes Mellitus, Psychiatric Disorder, Osteoporosis, Cushing's syndrome, Headache, Nausea, Insomnia, Dry mouth, Abdominal pain, Depression, Muscle cramp, Dyspepsia, Diarrhea, Skin reactions

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Budesonide should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment must be exercised.

Alcohol Not Advisable

Nasal Budesonide is is not advise to be used with Alcohol as it can cause dizziness.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Animal studies have shown that Budesonide is harmful at high exposures. However, there is no data on the usage of Budesonide in pregnancy and its adverse effects or risks to the fetus. It should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risk.

Driving Generally Safe

Budesonide usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

It should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. It is important to adjust the dose before administration and continue to monitor the patient.

Lactation Limited Data

There is limited data on whether there is a risk to the baby when using Budesonide during breastfeeding. However, Budesonide is excreted in breast milk thus it is advisable to avoid its usage unless the benefits exceed the risks.
