Caffeine is commonly used in the treatment of apnea of prematurity and migraine

How Caffeine Works

Caffeine is an antimigraine agent. Caffeine works by inhibiting the central adenosine receptors which relieve the symptoms of migraine.

Side Effects of Caffeine

Insomnia, Restlessness, Nervousness, Mild delirium, Nausea, Vomiting, Gastric irritation

Warnings

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Caffeine is safe for patients with renal disease.

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Caffeine. Taking Caffeine with alcohol may mask the depressant effect of alcohol and cause an increased intake of alcohol.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Caffeine may be safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have failed to show adverse effects on the fetus. However, there are limited well-controlled human studies. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Generally Safe

Caffeine usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

Caffeine is safe for patients with liver disease.

Lactation Limited Data

Caffeine must be used with caution during lactation. Limited human data suggests that it does not represent a significant risk to the baby. Please consult your doctor.
