Uses of Celecoxib
Celecoxib is commonly used in the treatment of Ankylosing Spondylitis, Osteoarthritis, Severe Acute Pain and Pain During Menstruation.
How Celecoxib Works
Celecoxib is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor. Celecoxib works by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandin in people suffering from pain. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties.
Side Effects of Celecoxib
Hypertension, Upper respiratory tract infections, Cough. Myocardial infarction, Hypersensitivity, Insomnia, Headache, Dizziness, Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal pain, Irritable bowel syndrome, GERD, Oedema, Skin rashes or pruritus
Warnings
Kidney Use With Care
Celecoxib should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment. Dose adjustment of Celecoxib is needed. However, it is contraindicated if patients have severe kidney impairment. Please consult your doctor before use.
Alcohol Not Advisable
Celecoxib should not be used with alcohol. Alcohol intake is one of the risk factors for upper and lower gastrointestinal complications such as perforations, ulcers or bleedings. Consuming Celecoxib with alcohol may increase the likelihood of developing the complications.
Pregnancy Not Safe
Celecoxib must be used with care during pregnancy. Animal reproduction studies demonstrate adverse effects on the fetus, and there are no adequate studies in pregnant women before 30 weeks of gestation. In women after 30 weeks of gestation, there is evidence of adverse effects on the fetal renal system and premature closure of the ductus arteriosus. This medication should only be used after the benefits and risks have been weighed properly. Please consult your doctor before using it.
Driving Generally Safe
Celecoxib usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
Liver Use With Care
Celecoxib should be used with caution in patients with mild or moderate liver disorder. Dose adjustment of Celecoxib is needed. However, it is contraindicated if patients have severe liver impairment Please consult your doctor.
Lactation Not Advisable
Celecoxib is shown to be excreted at concentration similar to that in the plasma in the milk of rats. Although it is said that there is very little excretion of Celecoxib into human breast milk, it is not advisable for women to breastfeed while consuming Celecoxib.
