How Ergotamine Works
Ergotamine works by exhibiting vasoconstrictive effects on the peripheral and cranial blood vessels producing central vasomotor centre depression. Besides that, it also affects the serotonin receptors by acting as a partial agonist. Ergotamine also exhibits strong oxytocic action on the uterus.
Side Effects of Ergotamine
Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal Pain, Weakness, Itching, Localised edema, Tingling of fingers and toes Transient tachycardia, Bradycardia, Numbness
Warnings
Kidney High Risk
Ergotamine is contraindicated in patients with renal impairment. Please consult your doctor.
Alcohol Safe
There is no known interaction between Ergotamine with alcohol.
Pregnancy Not Safe - High Risk
Ergotamine is unsafe to use during pregnancy. Both animal and human studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus. This medicine is strictly prohibited in pregnancy. Use of Ergotamine should be started only after pregnancy has been excluded.
Driving Not advisable
Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Ergotamine may cause side effects such as sedation which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.
Liver Use With Care
Ergotamine is contraindicated in patients with hepatic impairment. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation Not Advisable
Ergotamine is shown to be excreted in breast milk. It is not advisable for women to breastfeed while consuming Ergotamine because of its potential adverse drug effects on infants.
