Uses of Lactulose
Lactulose is commonly used to relieve constipation and used for intestine preparation before any surgery. It also used to treat complication of liver disease which is hepatic encephalopathy.
How Lactulose Works
Lactulose increases peristalsis by creating an osmotic effect in the colon. Besides that, Lactulose also works by reducing the absorption of ammonium ions and toxic nitrogen hence reducing the increased blood ammonia concentrations in certain liver diseases.

Nausea, Vomiting, Flatulence, Abdominal cramps, Diarrhea
Warnings
Kidney Safe If Prescribed
Lactulose is safe to be used in patients with kidney disease. However, please consult your doctor.
Alcohol Safe
There is no known interaction of Lactulose with alcohol.
Pregnancy Maybe Safe
Lactulose may be safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown no risk to the fetus. However, there are limited well-controlled human reproductive studies. The benefits from the use of Lactulose in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Driving Generally Safe
Lactulose usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Lactulose is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that Lactulose does not represent a significant risk to the baby. Please consult your doctor.
