Uses of Minoxidil
Minoxidil is commonly used in the treatment of severe hypertension and hair loss.
How Minoxidil Works
Minoxidil is a type of vasodilator. It works by dilating the blood vessels in the peripheries, thus decreasing the resistance and blood pressure. It is not to be used as a monotherapy.
Side Effects of Minoxidil
Fast Heart Rate, Pericarditis, High amount of hair over the body, Hypertrichosis, Change in hair colour, Fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion), Headache, Nausea, Abnormal ECG, Generalized swelling (oedema).
Warnings
Kidney Use With Care
Minoxidil may require dose adjustments for patients with renal failure due to disturbance in salt and water balance. Please consult your doctor before using it.
Alcohol Not Advisable
Alcohol consumption on Minoxidil treatment can cause further lowering of blood pressure.
Pregnancy Not Safe
Minoxidil may be unsafe to use during pregnancy as animal studies have shown risks to the foetus but human studies are still inconclusive. However, its benefits may outweigh the risk. Please consult your doctor before using it.
Driving Generally Safe
There are no studies on the effect of Minoxidil on the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
Liver Use With Care
Minoxidil is safe in patients with liver disease.
Lactation Not Advisable
Minoxidil is found to be excreted in breast milk and the risks to infants is still largely unknown. Therefore, it is still not recommended to breastfeed while on Minoxidil.
