Uses of Norethisterone

Norethisterone is commonly used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding, heavy menstrual bleeding, pain during menstruation, endometriosis, breast cancer, premature labour and postmenopausal osteoporosis. It is also commonly used as contraception and hormone replacement therapy.

How Norethisterone Works

Norethisterone binds to the progesterone receptors and reducing the frequency of GnRH release. It delays the onset of periods and controls abnormal uterine bleeding. It can be used as contraception due to its negative feedback inhibition of pituitary gonadotropin thus preventing ovulation.

Side Effects of Norethisterone

Thrombotic and thromboembolic events, Migraine, Headache, Breast discomfort, Mood swing, Nausea, Vomiting, Decrease sex drive, Loss of appetite, Changes in menstrual flow, Breakthrough bleeding, Acne, Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Norethisterone should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease as it may cause fluid retention in the body. Please consult your doctor.

Alcohol Safe

There is no apparent risk of consuming alcohol and Norethisterone simultaneously.

Pregnancy Not Safe - High Risk

Norethisterone is contradicted to use during pregnancy. Both animal and human studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus.

Driving Generally Safe

Norethisterone usually does not affect the abillity to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Use With Care

Norethisterone is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease due to its metabolism mainly takes place in the liver. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Not Advisable

Norethisterone is not recommended while breastfeeding.
