Sennosides is commonly used to treat Constipation

How Sennosides Works

Sennosides is a laxative which is able to increase the prostaglandin level in the gut, leading to restriction of water reabsorption due to decrease in aquaporin 3 production. This will produce a laxative effect that helps in patients with constipation.

Side Effects of Sennosides

Mild abdominal discomfort, Diarrhea, Hypokalaemia, Atonic colon, Reversible melanosis coli, Yellowish-brown urine/Red urine

Warnings

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Sennosides is safe to be used in patients with kidney impairment.

Alcohol Safe

There is no known interaction between alcohol and Sennosides when used concomitantly.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Components of Sennosides are found to have toxicities in experimental studies. Thus, it is not advisable to be used during pregnancy.

Driving Generally Safe

There are no studies about the effect of Sennosides on the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

Sennosides is safe to be used in patients with liver impairment.

Lactation Limited Data

There are limited data showing the excretion of metabolites in human breast milk. Thus, it is not advisable to be used during breastfeeding.
