Uses of Valacyclovir

Valacyclovir is commonly used to treat chickenpox, Hepatitis C Virus Hcv Infection, Eye Infections by Herpes Simplex Virus, Genital Herpes Infection, Herpes Labialis, Herpes Simplex Virus Infections.

How Valacyclovir Works

Valacyclovir is an antiviral drug. It is widely used for the treatment of herpes virus infection. It is converted to acyclovir by intestinal and hepatic metabolism. It inhibits DNA synthesis and viral replication by acting as the competitors to deoxyguanosine triphosphate for viral DNA polymerase and being consolidated into viral DNA.

Headache, Nausea, Vomiting, Confusion, Acute kidney failure in patients with kidney impairment

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Valacyclovirshould be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Inappropriate dosage for patients with renal impairments may worsen the renal condition. Dose adjustment of Valacyclovirmay be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not advisable to take Valacyclovirwith alcohol intake because it might worsen the side effects of Valacyclovirsuch as headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

Valacycloviris likely to be safe to use during pregnancy. Human and animal studies have failed to show any risk to the fetus and also no significant adverse reactions.

Driving Generally Safe

There are no studies on the effect of Valacycloviron the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Safe If Prescribed

Studies show that no dose modification needed in patient with mild to moderate cirrhosis who is on 1000mg of dose. Valacyclovir with a daily dose of 4000mg and above should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. The active substance of Valacyclovir is metabolized in the liver. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Safe If Prescribed

Valacycloviris most likely safe to use during lactation. Furthermore, Valacyclovirhas been used to treat herpes virus infection in neonates. The American Academy of Paediatrics also classifies Valacycloviras compatible to be used for breastfeeding mothers.
