How Zoledronic Acid Works
Zoledronic acid is able to inhibit farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase in the osteoclasts leading to reduction of osteoclastic activity and rate of bone resorption, thus maintain a net gain in bone mass.
Side Effects of Zoledronic Acid
Bone/Joint/Muscle pain, Dizziness, Fever, Flu-like symptoms, Allergy reaction, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Eye inflammation, Alopecia
Warnings
Kidney Use With Care
No dose adjustment needed in patients with a creatinine clearance of more than 35ml/min. However, Zoledronic Acid usage is not advisable in patients with a creatinine clearance of less than 35ml/min.
Alcohol Not Advisable
Although there is no known interaction between Zoledronic Acid and alcohol, excessive alcohol intake can cause bone loss which opposes the therapeutic uses of Zoledronic Acid.
Pregnancy Not Safe
Zoledronic Acid usage is not advisable during pregnancy as animal studies have shown toxic effects on the foetus. However, the potential risk for pregnant women is not known.
Driving Not advisable
Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Zoledronic Acid may cause side effects such as dizziness which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.
Liver Use With Care
Zoledronic Acid is safe to use in patients with liver impairment.
Lactation Not Advisable
Zoledronic Acid usage is not advisable during breastfeeding as the excretion of Zoledronic Acid in human milk is unknown.
