A scrotum ultrasound is an imaging test where sound waves (ultrasound waves) are used to provide images of a male's testicles and surrounding tissues. It is the main technique used to assess issues with the testicles, scrotum, and epididymis, the tubes that collect sperm close to the testicles. A scrotum ultrasound can be used to: * Assess the effects of scrotal trauma. * Check to see if a lump in your scrotum or testicles is solid (which suggests a tumor) or fluid-filled (which indicates a cyst) * Detect testicular torsion, which is a twisted spermatic cord that prevents blood flow to your testicles * Determine the source(s) of your testicles' discomfort or swelling * Find and diagnose varicoceles, or varicose veins, in the scrotum * Discover the location of a testicle that has not descended The scan is recommended for men with recurrent pain in their scrotum or who have other signs and symptoms that may indicate a more serious underlying condition.
