Uses of Allopurinol + Benzbromarone

The combination of Allopurinol and Benzbromarone belongs to the class of medications known as xanthine oxidase inhibitors and uricosuric agents, and it is indicated for the treatment of gout and hyperuricemia.

How Allopurinol + Benzbromarone Works

Allopurinol reduces uric acid production by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in its synthesis. Benzbromarone enhances uric acid excretion by inhibiting its reabsorption in the kidneys, collectively lowering elevated uric acid levels associated with conditions such as gout.

Side Effects of Allopurinol + Benzbromarone

Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal Pain, and Diarrhea.

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Allopurinol + Benzbromarone should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease, especially if used with diuretics. A dose adjustment of Allopurinol + Benzbromarone may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not advisable to take alcohol with Allopurinol + Benzbromarone as it would worsen any dizziness, blurred vision, and drowsiness.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Allopurinol + Benzbromarone may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risks. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Allopurinol + Benzbromarone may cause side effects such as sleepiness, vertigo, or loss of balance, all of which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.

Liver Use With Care

Patients with liver disease should use Allopurinol + Benzbromarone with caution. Dose adjustment of Allopurinol + Benzbromarone may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Limited Data

Allopurinol + Benzbromarone is excreted in the breast milk, along with its active metabolite oxipurinol. However, no data shows any effect of Allopurinol + Benzbromarone in the breast milk on the baby. Ultimately, it is not recommended as of now.
