How Bicalutamide Works
Bicalutamide works by competitively inhibit the androgen from binding onto its receptor in the target tissue. This, in turn, prevents the androgen-dependent protein and DNA synthesis in the tumour which lead to tumour regression.
Side Effects of Bicalutamide
Decreased appetite, Weight gain, Dehydration, Decrease libido, Lips swelling, Dizziness, Somnolence, Hot flushes, Constipation, Nausea
Warnings
Kidney Use With Care
Bicalutamide is excreted via urine and the use of it mild to moderate renal impairment does not require dose adjustment. However, in severe renal impairment, caution should be taken and dose adjustment may be required.
Alcohol Not Advisable
Alcohol may exacerbate the side effects of Bicalutamide such as facial flushing and dizziness. It is therefore not advisable to be consumed together.
Pregnancy Not Safe - High Risk
Bicalutamide is contraindicated to be used in women and hence during pregnancy as well due to its potential serious adverse effects on the women and the fetus.
Driving Not advisable
It is not advisable to drive while taking Bicalutamide as it can cause side effects such as dizziness and somnolence all of which can alter the concentration and ability to drive.
Liver Use With Care
Bicalutamide is extensively metabolised by the liver and caution should be taken in moderate to severe hepatic impairment. Regular liver function test should be taken and alternative treatment should be considered in high-risk patients.
Lactation Not Advisable
Since it is not safe to be used by women, it is also contraindicated for breastfeeding mother to use Bicalutamide.
