Uses of Calamine

Calamine is commonly used in the treatment of Dermatitis and Eczema and to treat itchiness.

How Calamine Works

Calamine is a topical antipruritic or antihistamine. It works by contracting skin cells and tissues which may reduce histamine release in people with dermatitis and eczema. It relieves itchiness. In addition, Calamine also has mild antibacterial property.

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Calamine could be used in patients with kidney disease. Calamine does not absorb through the skin, even though it is applied topically.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Calamine.

Pregnancy Limited Data

Calamine is safe to use during pregnancy. No studies have been conducted on the adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are no negative effect recorded since the product has been used for many years.

Driving Generally Safe

Calamine usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

Calamine could be used in patients with liver disease. Calamine is a topical use only and it does not absorb through the skin.

Lactation Limited Data

Calamine is safe to use during lactation. No human data suggests that Calamine does represent a significant risk to the baby.
