Uses of Ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin is commonly used in the treatment of Bacterial Eye Infections, Bacterial Infections Of External Ear, Bacterial Infections Of Urinary Tract, Sinusitis, Gonorrhoea and intra-abdominal infections.

How Ciprofloxacin Works

Ciprofloxacin an anti-infective agent. It works by inhibiting enzymes such as DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential in the bacterial replication, transcription, repair and recombination.

Side Effects of Ciprofloxacin

Nausea, Diarhoea, Abdominal pain, Fever, Irritability, Myalgia, Arthralgia, Rash Ear pruritus, Dizziness

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Ciprofloxacin should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Ciprofloxacin may be needed.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Ciprofloxacin as there is no known drug interactions.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Ciprofloxacin may be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus such as immature cartilage, however, there are limited human studies.

Driving Not advisable

Ciprofloxacin may lead to neurological side effects such as slow reaction time which could affect the ability to drive.

Liver Use With Care

Dose titration of Ciprofloxacin is not necessary in patients with liver disease.

Lactation Not Advisable

Ciprofloxacin is found in human breast milk. It is probably unsafe to be used during lactation due to potential cartilage defect.
