Uses of Clopidogrel

Clopidogrel is commonly used in the treatment of heart attack and unstable angina.

How Clopidogrel Works

Clopidogrel is a thrombolytic agent which works by inhibiting platelet aggregation. It activates glycoprotein GPIIb/IIIa complex which then reduces platelet aggregation. This will help to prevent blood clotting in patients with a heart attack and unstable angina.

Side Effects of Clopidogrel

Diarrhea, Abdominal pain, Dyspepsia, Hematoma, Bruising, Epistaxis, Bleeding at puncture site, Steven-Johnson syndrome, Myalgia, Hematuria

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

There is limited study on the usage of Clopidogrel in patients with renal impairment. This, it is recommended that Clopidogrel should be used with caution in such patients.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to take alcohol with Clopidogrel. However, it is advisable to consume alcohol in moderate amount because drinking too much alcohol while on Clopidogrel might irritate the stomach.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

Animal studies have failed to prove that there is a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate human studies. As no data is available, it is recommended not to use Clopidogrel during pregnancy.

Driving Generally Safe

Clopidogrel usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

There is limited experience in patients with liver disease who may have bleeding tendencies. In such a population, Clopidogrel need to be used with caution.

Lactation Limited Data

There is limited human data on whether Clopidogrel is excreted in human breast milk. Animal studies demonstrated that Clopidogrel is excreted in breast milk. It is advisable that breastfeeding is discontinued following treatment with Clopidogrel.
