Dextran 70 is commonly used for short term fluid replacement after trauma.

How Dextran 70 Works

Dextran 70 is a plasma volume expander that is synthesized by natural sugar. It also functions by reducing the viscosity of the blood, hence reducing the chances for red blood cells to aggregate.

Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal Pain, Headache, Dizziness, Allergic reaction, Hair loss

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Dextran 70 should be given with caution to the patient with kidney disease and should be avoided in patients with severe kidney disease with no urine output.

Alcohol Safe

It is unusual to have alcohol with Dextran 70, but it is generally safe to have alcohol with Dextran 70.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Dextran 70 is contraindicated during pregnancy as animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of Dextran 70 in pregnant women despite potential risks Therefore, please consult your doctor before using Dextran 70.

Driving Generally Safe

Dextran 70 usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Dextran 70 is safe in patients with liver disease.
