Uses of Dextrose

Dextrose 5% is commonly used in the treatment of dehydration. Besides, it is also used for short term fluid replacement after trauma.

How Dextrose Works

Dextrose are used as sources of electrolytes, calories and water for hydration. Content of sodium and chloride ions in the solution regulates the acid-base balance of body. Besides, it promotes glycogen deposition and reduces or prevents ketosis.

Fever, Phlebitis, Hypervolaemia

Kidney Use With Care

Dextrose should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. It may cause sodium retention with oedema. Dose adjustment of Dextrose may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Dextrose. Furthermore, there is a solution available with mixtures of alcohol in Dextrose in the market. However, if you are feeling unwell please consult your doctor.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Dextrose may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown side effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable even with the risk. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Generally Safe

Liver Limited Data

Dextrose may be used for patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Dextrose may not be needed. However, if there is any significant adverse reaction, please consult your doctor.

Lactation Limited Data

No academic reports explaining the use of Dextrose in breastfeeding mothers. Please use it with caution.
