Dutasteride
Uses of Dutasteride
Dutasteride is commonly used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and hair loss.
How Dutasteride Works
Dutasteride acts as a selective inhibitor of steroid 5α-reductase isoenzymes type 1 (skin and hepatic) and type 2 (reproductive tissues). As a result, the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone is inhibited and thus serum dihydrotestosterone levels are suppressed.
Side Effects of Dutasteride
Ejaculation disorder, Impotence, Decreased libido, Breast cancer, Breast tenderness, Rash, Urticaria, Testicular pain and swelling, Depressed mood, Localized edema
Warnings
Kidney Use With Care
There is limited data on the usage of Dutasteride in patients with renal impairment. However, dosage adjustment is not expected for such patients.
Alcohol Not Advisable
It is not advisable to use Dutasteride with alcohol because alcohol may dehydrate and cause difficult urination. The symptoms may also get worse thus, it is recommended to avoid or limit alcohol while taking Dutasteride. There are few studies which reported that alcohol can affect prostate cancer prevention in patients taking Dutasteride or other α-reductase inhibitors.
Pregnancy Not Safe - High Risk
When Dutasteride is given to a pregnant woman with a male fetus, it will inhibit the development of external genitalia of the fetus. Small amounts of Dutasteride have been found from the semen in subjects taking them, though it is unknown whether a male fetus can be affected if his mother is exposed to such semen.
Driving Generally Safe
Dutasteride usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
Liver Limited Data
In patients with mild to moderate liver impairment, it is important to use Dutasteride with caution. It should be avoided at all cost in patients with severe liver disease.
Lactation Limited Data
It remains unknown whether Dutasteride is excreted in human breast milk. But it is contraindicated in women of child-bearing potential
