Felodipine
Uses of Felodipine
Felodipine is commonly used in the treatment of hypertension and chronic stable angina pectoris.
How Felodipine Works
Felodipine, a dihydropyridine Ca-channel blocker, produces coronary vasodilation by inhibiting the entry of Ca ions in the myocardium during depolarisation. In addition, it also increases myocardial oxygen delivery in cases of vasospastic angina.
Side Effects of Felodipine
Flushing, Headache, Palpitations, Dizziness, Fatigue, Peripheral oedema, Mild gingival hyperplasia
Warnings
Kidney Safe If Prescribed
Felodipine is well tolerated by patients with concomitant kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Felodipine may be needed. Please consult your doctor before using it.
Alcohol Not Advisable
Drinking alcohol can aggravate the blood pressure-lowering effect of Felodipine. Hypotension can make you feel dizzy or light-headed, all of which could affect your concentration and ability to drive.
Pregnancy Not Safe
Felodipine may be unsafe for use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor before using it.
Driving Not advisable
Felodipine may cause side effects such as dizziness, headaches, nausea or tiredness, all of which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
Liver Limited Data
Felodipine should be used with caution in patients with liver disease because it is metabolized mainly by the liver. Dose adjustment of Felodipine may be needed. Please consult your doctor before using it.
Lactation Limited Data
Felodipine is probably safe to use during lactation even though it is excreted into breast milk. However, its effect on a feeding baby is largely unknown. Please consult your doctor before using it.
