How Gemfibrozil Works

Gemfibrozil is a derivative of fibric acid. The mechanism of action is not yet fully understood. It decreases the liver synthesis of VLDL and LDL cholesterols (the bad cholesterols) and increases the HDL (the good cholesterol).

Side Effects of Gemfibrozil

Muscle weakness, Dizziness, Drowsiness, Headache, Fatigue, Taste disturbance, Nausea, Vomiting, Reduced libido, Blurred vision

Warnings

Kidney High Risk

Dosage adjustment is needed in mild to moderate renal impaired patients and is contraindicated to be used in patients with severe renal impairment.

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not advisable to drink alcohol when taking Gemfibrozil treatment as to avoid alcohol abuse which can precipitate rhabdomyolysis.

Pregnancy Not Safe

There is only limited animal and human reproductive while the former suggests reproductive risk. Gemfibrozil should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Driving Not advisable

It is not advisable to drive when on Gemfibrozil due to its potential side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness and headache which can affect the ability to drive and concentrate.

Liver Limited Data

It is contraindicated for Gemfibrozil to be used in patients with hepatic impairment.

Lactation Limited Data

Gemfibrozil is not known whether to present in the human breastmilk or not. It advisable to stop breastfeeding or the treatment due to its potential toxicity.
