How Lopinavir Works

Lopinavir is an antiretroviral agent which is used in combination with Ritonavir. It inhibits an enzyme, HIV protease to be incapable of processing the polyprotein precursor. This leads to the production of non-infectious and immature HIV particles.

Side Effects of Lopinavir

Diarrhea, Abdominal pain, Headache, Indigestion (Dyspepsia), Vomiting, Palpitation, Agitation and confusion, Tinnitus, Acne, Dry skin and skin discoloration

Warnings

Kidney High Risk

Lopinavir is contraindicated in patients with kidney failure.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Lopinavir as there is no known drug interactions.

Pregnancy Limited Data

Lopinavir may be safe to use during pregnancy if it is clinically indicated. Human studies have not shown any adverse effects to fetal formation.

Driving Limited Data

There is no information regarding the effects of Lopinavir whilst driving. However, patients should be informed that there is a risk of nausea when taking Lopinavir.

Liver Limited Data

In patients with liver disease, the use of Lopinavir is contraindicated.

Lactation Limited Data

It is not known whether Lopinavir is excreted in human milk. Adverse risk effect cannot be excluded. Therefore, it is not recommended for Lopinavir to be used during lactation. Also, mothers with HIV should avoid breastfeeding their babies to avoid transmission.
