Uses of Mebendazole

Mebendazole is commonly used to treat Enterobiasis, Ascariasis, Hookworm infections and Trichuriasis.

How Mebendazole Works

Mebendazole is an anthelmintic. It inhibits the formation of helminth microtubules and causes degenerative changes in the intestine. It also blocks glucose uptake and disrupts digestive and reproductive functions resulting in immobilization, inhibition of egg production and death of the helminth.

Side Effects of Mebendazole

Diarrhea, Flatulence, Abdominal pain, Loss of appetite, Hepatitis, Headache, Dizziness, Rash

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Due to limited data regarding the effect of Mebendazole on the kidneys, it should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Mebendazole may be needed. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Mebendazole. There is no clear contraindication on the consumption of alcohol when taking Mebendazole.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Driving Generally Safe

Mebendazole cause minimal to no side effects which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

Mebendazole should be used with caution in patients with liver disease because it is primarily metabolized in the liver. Dose adjustment of Mebendazole may be needed. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Lactation Limited Data

Mebendazole is probably safe to use during lactation. Mebendazole is excreted in human milk but there is limited data on the effect of Mebendazole in breastfed infants. Please consult your doctor before using it.
