Uses of Menthol

Menthol is commonly used in the treatment of nasal congestion (blocked nose) , muscle pain and throat Irritation

How Menthol Works

Menthol which exists in the form of inhalation, ointment or pastilles is commonly used for the symptomatic relief of sinusitis, bronchitis and similar condition. Its formula is usually in combination with benzoin, eucalyptus oil or camphor.

Side Effects of Menthol

Hypersensitivity reactions, Ingestion of large amount of menthol may cause GI effects such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, vertigo, ataxia, drowsiness and coma.

Warnings

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Menthol is safe to be used in patients with kidney disease. The metabolism and excretion of Menthol do not involve the kidneys.

Alcohol Limited Data

There's no known complications with the usage of alcohol and Menthol.

Pregnancy Limited Data

To date, there is no known risk to infants when used as directed. However, no definite conclusion has been made due to the lack of systematic scientific studies. As a precaution, ask the doctor, pharmacist or chemist for advice before using it.

Driving Generally Safe

Menthol usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

Menthol is safe to be used in patients with liver disease. The metabolism of Menthol does not involve the liver.
