How Methenamine Works

Methenamine works as antibacterial agents by converting into formaldehyde in the acidic urine which kills off both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Warnings

Kidney High Risk

Methenamine is contraindicated to be used in patients with renal impairment.

Alcohol Safe

There is no clear contraindication on the consumption of alcohol when taking Methenamine.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Limited animal reproductive studies have not shown any adverse effects or fetal toxicity. Methenamine should be used with caution in pregnancy due to some of Methenamine that can cross the placenta.

Driving Generally Safe

Methenamine can be used before driving as it does not show to affect the ability and concentration to drive.

Liver Safe If Prescribed

Dosage adjustment may be needed for patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment and is contraindicated for patients with severe hepatic impairment.

Lactation Safe If Prescribed

The metabolites of Methenamine has been detected in human breastmilk and thus it should be used with caution during breastfeeding.
