Metoclopramide is commonly used in the treatment of heartburn, indigestion, nausea and vomiting

How Metoclopramide Works

Metoclopramide exerts its antiemetic action by acting on the dopamine and serotonin receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the central nervous system, also known as the vomiting centre. It causes an increase in response to acetylcholine in the upper gastrointestinal tract thereby increasing the gastric emptying time and intestinal transit time without affecting the gastric, biliary and pancreatic secretions.

Metoclopramide dose should be adjusted in patients with renal impairment..

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Metoclopramide as alcohol potentiate sedative effect of Metoclopramide.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

Metoclopramide may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have not shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may outweigh the risk. Please consult your doctor before using.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Metoclopramide may cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness or abnormal muscle twitching, all of which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.

Liver Limited Data

Metoclopramide should be cautionly use in patients with liver problem. Dose adjustment is advisable in this group of people.

Lactation Limited Data

It is found that Metoclopramide is excreted in minimal quantities in breast milk and not adequate to cause harmful effects. However, it is advisable to practice caution while taking Metoclopramide during breastfeeding.
