Uses of Milk Of Magnesia

Milk Of Magnesia is commonly used in the treatment of constipation, indigestion, hyperacidity, heartburn and flatulence.

How Milk Of Magnesia Works

Milk Of Magnesia causes water retention through osmosis which stimulates peristalsis of the bowel. Its production of inflammatory mediators and stimulation of cholecystokinin release results in the accumulation of intraluminal fluid and electrolyte causes an increase in intestinal motility.

Side Effects of Milk Of Magnesia

Bloating, Nausea, Flatulence, Diarrhea, Increased thirst, Electrolye imbalance (Confusion, Irregular heartbeats, Muscle cramp, Lethargy, Weakness)

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Milk Of Magnesia should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment. There could be an accumulation of magnesium in such patients which may result in toxic effects.

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not advisable to consume alcohol with Milk Of Magnesia as the alcohol may cause a decrease in Milk Of Magnesia's efficacy.

Pregnancy Limited Data

Milk Of Magnesia has not been assigned with FDA pregnancy category. Animal studies do not show indirect or direct adverse effects on the fetus. Magnesium can cross the placenta therefore, it is recommended to avoid Milk Of Magnesia during pregnancy.

Driving Generally Safe

Milk Of Magnesia usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

It is safe to use Milk Of Magnesia in patients with liver impairment.

Lactation Limited Data

It has been shown that magnesium is excreted in small amounts in breast milk thus it is recommended to avoid Milk Of Magnesia during breastfeeding.
