Neomycin

Uses of Neomycin

Neomycin is commonly used in the treatment of bacterial skin infections.

How Neomycin Works

Neomycin is an antibiotic of class Aminoglycosides. It works by disrupting the process of bacterial protein synthesis through the binding to the 30S ribosomal subunits which kill the bacterial cells.

Side Effects of Neomycin

Ear toxicity, Nausea, Vomiting, Increased salivation, Rash at angle of mouth, Liver dysfunction, Diarrhea, Allergic reactions

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Neomycin needs cautious use in patients with renal impairment as it can cause nephrotoxicity. Dose adjustment of Neomycin and monitoring of renal function is necessary. Please consult your doctor.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Neomycin. Consuming Neomycin with alcohol will not interfere with the way the medication works.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Neomycin is not recommended during pregnancy. There is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant the use of Neomycin in pregnant women despite potential risks.

Driving Generally Safe

Neomycin usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Use With Care

Although Neomycin is used in hepatic encephalopathy, it still needs dose adjustments in patients with liver impairment. Please consult your doctor before use.

Lactation Not Advisable

Neomycin is probably unsafe to use during lactation. Neomycin is excreted into human breast milk and may cause harmful effects on the newborns, thus, it should be avoided during lactation.
