Uses of Oxymetazoline

Oxymetazoline is commonly used to treat conjunctivitis, eye irritation, nasal congestion or blocked nose, pupil dilation and uveitis.

How Oxymetazoline Works

Oxymetazoline works by stimulating α-adrenergic receptors which then produces local vasoconstriction on the blood vessels at nasal mucosa and conjunctiva. As a result, there is a decrease in blood flow causing reduced nasal & conjunctival congestion.

Side Effects of Oxymetazoline

Dry mouth and throat, Burning or stinging sensation, Sneezing, Rebound rhinitis, Dry nose, Rebound nasal congestion, Local irritation, Rhinitis medicamentosa

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

It is recommended to use Oxymetazoline with caution in patients with renal impairment as there is limited data on the safety profile of this drug.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Oxymetazoline as it only has topical formulations.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Animal studies have reported that there is a risk to the fetus and there are insufficient studies in humans, however, the potential benefits of Oxymetazoline may allow the usage in pregnancy.

Driving Generally Safe

Oxymetazoline usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

It is recommended to use Oxymetazoline with caution in patients with liver impairment as there is limited data on the safety profile of Oxymetazoline.

Lactation Limited Data

The safety profile of Oxymetazoline during breastfeeding has not been established therefore, please consult your doctor prior.
