How Prochlorperazine Works

Prochlorperazine is an Antipsychotics Prochlorperazine works by inhibiting the postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic D1 and D2 receptors in the brain which includes the chemoreceptor trigger zone. It also produces α-adrenergic and anticholinergic effects and suppresses the release of the hypothalamic and hypophyseal hormones, reticular activating system thus affecting basal metabolism, body temperature, wakefulness, vasomotor tone and emesis.

Side Effects of Prochlorperazine

Amenorrhea, Nausea, Difficulty sleeping (insomnia), Vomiting, Blurred vision, Impotence, Dizziness, Urticaria, Jaundice, Constipation

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Prochlorperazine should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment. Dose adjustment of Prochlorperazine may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not advisable to drink alcohol with Prochlorperazine as it enhances the CNS effects of the Alcohol.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Prochlorperazine may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown side effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Prochlorperazine may cause side effects such as drowsiness which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.

Liver Limited Data

Prochlorperazine contraindicated in impaired liver function.

Lactation Limited Data

Since data from animal studies shows that Prochlorperazine may be found in breast milk, Prochlorperazineshould not be used during lactation.
