Proparacaine works by preventing initiation and transmission of nerve impulse by decreasing the ion permeability.
Side Effects of Proparacaine
Allergic skin reaction, Burning sensation to the eyes, Eye redness, Stinging in the eyes, Bleeding in the eyes
Warnings
Kidney Safe If Prescribed
No dosage adjustment is needed for patients with renal impairment as indicated by the manufacturer labelling as systemic absorption is low.
Alcohol Safe
There is no known contraindication in alcohol consumption while taking Proparacaine.
Pregnancy Limited Data
There is no animal nor human reproductive data to conclude the safety of Proparacaine during pregnancy. It is therefore advisable to discuss the use of Proparacaine with your doctor.
Driving Not advisable
It is not advisable to drive after Proparacaine treatment due to its potential side effects such as burning sensation to the eyes which can affect the ability to concentrate and drive.
Liver Limited Data
There is no dosage adjustment needed for patients with hepatic impairment according to the manufacturer labelling as systemic absorption is low.
Lactation Limited Data
It is not known whether Proparacaine is excreted into human breastmilk or not. It is not advisable to be used during breastfeeding according to the manufacturer labelling.
