Uses of Pyridoxine

Vitamin B6/ Pyridoxine is used in the treatment of Sideroblastic Anemia.

How Pyridoxine Works

Vitamin B6 or its other name Pyridoxine is a water-soluble vitamin involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. In helps in the formation of hemoglobin, GABA synthesis within the CNS and the release of glycogen stored in the liver and muscles.

Side Effects of Pyridoxine

Severe peripheral neuropathies, Decreased sensation, Headache, Loss of appetite, Nausea, Numbness or tingling, Sensory nerve damage

Warnings

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Pyridoxine is given as a supplement due to the common deficient among the patient with chronic renal failure.

Alcohol Safe

There is no known interaction between alcohol and Pyridoxine.

Pregnancy Safe If Prescribed

Pyridoxine may be safe to use during pregnancy. Controlled studies in women fail to demonstrate a risk to the foetus in the 1st trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters), and the possibility of foetal harm remains unknown.

Driving Generally Safe

Pyridoxine has no effect on the ability to drive.

Liver Limited Data

Pyridoxine is given as a supplement and coenzyme form of Pyridoxine were found to be significantly lower than normal in patients with liver diseases.

Lactation Limited Data

Vitamin 6/ Pyridoxine is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that Pyridoxine does not represent a significant risk to the baby and doses closer to physiologic levels had no effect on lactation.
