Uses of Salmeterol
Salmeterol is commonly used to treat Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
How Salmeterol Works
Salmeterol binds and inhibits the beta 2 receptors in the lungs and bronchiolar smooth muscle leading to relaxation of smooth muscle, bronchodilation and increased air entry into the lungs.

Warnings
Kidney Safe If Prescribed
Salmeterol can be used in patients with severe kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Salmeterol may be needed. However, if there is an overdosing of Salmeterol, it may lead to metabolic acidosis. Please consult your doctor.
Alcohol Not Advisable
You should not consume alcohol with Salmeterol. Taking Salmeterol with alcohol may have additive effects such as headache, low blood pressure, dizziness or palpitation.
Pregnancy Not Safe
Salmeterol may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown adverse reactions on the fetus at a very high dose, however, there are limited human studies. Hence, it is recommended to avoid usage during pregnancy. Please consult your doctor.
Driving Generally Safe
Salmeterol usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
Liver Limited Data
Salmeterol should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Salmeterol may be needed. Hepatic function needs to be monitored. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation Limited Data
Animal studies have shown excretion of Salmeterol in milk so risk to breastfed newborns cannot be excluded. Its usage is justified when benefits outweigh the risks.
