Uses of Tamsulosin

Tamsulosin is commonly used in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

How Tamsulosin Works

Tamsulosin is an alpha-1 adrenoceptor antagonist. It binds competitively to alpha receptor which reduce smooth muscle contraction. Thus, it relaxed prostatic and urethral smooth muscle.

Side Effects of Tamsulosin

Hypotension, Headache, Dizziness, Decreased libido, Increased cough, Palpitation, Visual disturbances

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Tamsulosin is relatively safe for patients with renal impairment. However, there are no reports available on the safety of Tamsulosin for patients with nephropathy. Thus, please consult your doctor for more details.

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Tamsulosin. It may worsen the side effects of Tamsulosin such as headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and palpitations.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

Tamsulosin is likely to be safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies do not show any side effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. Please consult your doctor for more details.

Driving Generally Safe

There are no studies on the effect of Tamsulosin on the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

Tamsulosin should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment may be needed. However, severe hepatic impairment is one of the contraindications of Tamsulosin. Please consult your doctor for confirmation.

Lactation Limited Data

No reports on the safety of usage Tamsulosin during human lactation are available yet. This drug is not indicated for women.
