Uses of Timolol

Timolol is commonly used in the treatment of Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension.

How Timolol Works

Timolol is a beta adrenergic receptor blocker. However, the mechanism to reduce the ocular pressure is unknown, it is hypothesized to decrease the secretion of aqueous humour in the eye.

Side Effects of Timolol

Stinging sensation of eye, Decrease blood pressure, Irregular heartbeat, Congestive heart failure, Headache, Dizziness, Fatigue, Abdominal pain and discomfort, Low blood sugar level, Constipation.

Warnings

Kidney Use With Care

Timolol is excreted mainly by the kidneys, therefore in renal insufficiency, reductions of dosage may be necessary.

Alcohol Not Advisable

Drinking alcohol while on this medication can cause dizziness and also drowsiness which could be the cause of incidental injury.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Studies of Timolol in pregnant women are not adequate but there are incidence of intra-uterine growth retardation of foetus if taken orally. Hence, usage of Timolol should be restricted during pregnancy unless it is clearly necessary. Please do consult a doctor.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Timolol may cause side effects such as dizziness, headches, nausea or palpitations, all of which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.

Liver Use With Care

Timolol is partially metabolized in the liver dosage reductions may be necessary in the presence of hepatic insufficiency

Lactation Not Advisable

Timolol is excreted in breast milk. However, it is unlikely that significant amount at therapeutic doses of Timolol in eye drops that is present in breast milk would produce clinical symptoms of in the baby.
