Uses of Tolnaftate

Tolnaftate is commonly used to treat Fungal infections, Fungal Infections of mouth thrush, Fungal skin infections and nail Infections.

How Tolnaftate Works

Tolnaftate works by distorting the hyphae and terminates the growth of mycelial in susceptible fungi thus inhibiting the growth of dermatophytes.

Irritation of the skin, Rashes, Stinging, Itchiness, Dermatitis

Since it is used topically, it is safe to use this medication

Alcohol Safe

All Tolnaftate preparations are available topically and for external use only. Though no sufficient data of the interactions that will occur when taken with alcohol, tell your doctor if you happen to drink alcohol while taking this medication.

Pregnancy Limited Data

Tolnaftate is not assigned to a specific FDA pregnancy risk category. In animal studies, Tolnaftate did not give a harmful effect on fetal or postnatal development. Although, safety in pregnancy has not been confirmed but there are no teratogenic effects have been recorded in clinical use.

Driving Generally Safe

Tolnaftate usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Liver Limited Data

It is safe to use this medication since it is applied topically and there is no data available for the use of Tolnaftate with liver safety

Lactation Limited Data

There is limited data on whether topical Tolnaftate is secreted into breast milk. No report on the unfavorable effects in a nursing infant whose mother was using Tolnaftate.
